Hosted by the Atlanta Bar Foundation, the event will be at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta’s Little Five Points. The proceeds from the charitable event support local pro bono legal services organizations and Atlanta youth programs.

This year’s band competition will feature eight bands, with each band comprised of one or more lawyers and some bands composed of all lawyers. A panel of three judges will provide 50 percent of the scores and the audience will provide the other 50 percent. The winning band will be announced at the end of the evening and there will also be an award for Best Original Song. The judges this year are entertainment lawyers Darryl Cohen and Lisa Moore, and Atlanta radio personality Kaedi Kiely of The River 97.1 FM radio.

For the past two years, LawJam has sold out Variety Playhouse and more than 600 lawyers, judges and guests have enjoyed great music while voting for their favorite bands.

To utilize full-text searching, clients log in at www.huseby.com. The search feature lets you search transcripts, exhibits, and soon, invoices, by searching

    • all words,
   
    • any words,

Users can drill down their results even further by selecting a specific file type to search, including a transcript type and/or an exhibit, and also the case name.

Say you search for the name John Doe. Your results will show all files that include that name, plus the file type, description, case name and witness name.  Content excerpts allow you to more closely match search results with the file(s) you were looking for.

In the two weeks since we last posted about the campaign finance case that has a seamy underside, the prosecution has brought forth a string of witnesses — including Edwards aides, and people associated with Bunny Mellon — to testify about when and how the heiress Mellon gave money to Edwards.

The testimony of an interior designer for Mellon has put interior designers on the defensive, according to the New York Times. Most of us don’t go rogue, they say.

Thursday, the prosecution rested its case and today the defense is expected to ask the judge to throw out the case, a routine motion in criminal trials. But after 14 days of testimony and evidence presented by prosecutors, the Chicago Sun-Times found legal observers in North Carolina who said the government’s case was weak.

The testimony ended yesterday with a 2008 ABC News video of Edwards denying he was the father of his mistress’ child. Of course, Edwards later admitted the child, now 4, was his. The video proved Edwards lied about the child, but has only a tangential connection to what the trial’s about: Did Edwards violate campaign finance laws? In the ABC interview, he also denies asking any of his wealthy donors to support Hunter or the baby. Was he lying then as well?

The News & Observer of Raleigh reports the case is summed up in these key points:

1. Whether payments to Edwards mistress Rielle Hunter and Edwards aide Andrew Young were intended to keep Edwards’ 2008 presidential campaign alive.

2. Whether Edwards knew about those payments.

Edwards faces six criminal counts:

• one of conspiracy,

• four counts of receiving illegal campaign contributions,

• and one count of making false statements.

If convicted on all six counts, Edwards faces up to 30 years in prison and $1.5 million in fines.

In addition, the tool shows each file’s type (transcript, invoice, etc.), more description of each file if necessary, the date each file was uploaded, and whether or not individual files have been reviewed.

One key feature of the Web resource center is the interactive calendar. With it, clients can:

• Search the schedule of a specific case or attorney,  which is great for paralegals and legal assistants,

•  Click on an assignment to check the details or make changes,

• Get directions to a location using interactive Google maps,

• Merge the resource center calendar with their Outlook calendar.

In the most recent development, John Edwards’s former aide Andrew Young acknowledged that much of the money obtained from two wealthy supporters went toward construction of his $1.5 million Orange County home, the News & Observer of Raleigh reports today.

In the case, currently underway in Greensboro, North Carolina, the government claims Edwards, 58, violated campaign-finance laws in his 2008 presidential run to cover up his extramarital affair with Rielle Hunter.

The key questions are:

1. Whether payments to Hunter and Young were intended to keep Edwards’ 2008 presidential campaign alive.

2. Whether Edwards knew about those payments.
Several analysts have concluded Edwards is slimy, but not a criminal. One of the first to suggest it was Maureen Dowd in the New York Times.

In a recent poll, just three percent of those surveyed have a positive view of Edwards (not surprisingly). Also no surprise, women like him the least.

Edwards’ oldest daughter, Cate, has also been the subject of reporting. She will testify on his behalf later in the trial, and has been with her father every day of the trial, including jury selection. See why the judge made the unusual decision to let a witness attend the trial.
