Court Reporting is a Terrific Opportunity to Work from Home

The job market isn’t the same as it was 20 years ago.  Workers want the flexibility to work their own hours to have time with their families.  Men and women alike are looking for genuine work at home opportunities.

One of the hottest home careers is the certified court reporter.  Demand is high and salaries are skyrocketing.  Like most court reporting agencies, most of the staff at Huseby is made up of independent contractors in home offices.

Court Reporters are Not Stenographers or Transcriptionists

These professions seem similar to the casual observer since they all create written documents from the spoken work, but there are important differences among them.

Stenographers use shorthand or stenotype machines to take dictation then transcribe those notes into word processor documents.  These are often letters but may be other records such as meeting minutes.  Stenographers often perform other duties such as filing or reception.

Transcriptionists seldom work in real time.  They transcribe recordings into reports using equipment that allows them to start, stop, and rewind so they can keep up.  Most transcriptionists work in the medical field with doctors’ notes and must have a comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology.

Court reporters provide unbiased documentation of official proceedings including not just trials but also depositions, corporate meetings, and other events.  Some work from recordings but most take notes in real time.  Despite the name, many do not work for court systems.  They are in demand by lawyers, television stations, and private corporations.

Court reporting goes beyond dictation.  Reporters are professional witnesses providing an objective documentation of potentially controversial dealings.  Documents prepared by certified court reporters are often used in legal proceedings and carry more weight than a document prepared by a transcriptionist or a stenographer.

Educational Requirements and Job Prospects

Although court reporting is a high-demand and high-compensation career path, it requires a substantial amount of training.  These professionals have at least a 2-year degree and those from 4-year programs have better job prospects.

Despite past predictions, technology has increased the demand for court reporters.  For example, the California State Labor Market Information Division recently stated that the number of reporters in the state fell by 3% even as demand rose by 33%.  This is typical and every state is in desperate need.

Opportunities to Work at Home
