3 Tips for Hiring a Scopist
Editing and proofreading transcripts takes up a good chunk of a court reporter’s time. It can be stressful balancing the editing of a transcript and time spent working on the job, in the actual depositions. An effective solution to many court reporter’s time management stress is to hire a scopist. A scopist is a trained proofreader and editor of transcripts, who court reporters can hire to do just that.
Many court reporters would rather not have to pay a scopist, and they do the scoping themselves, but for some (especially during the holiday season) hiring a scopist provides a great relief and allows them to take on even more work. Below we have provided a few tips for using a scopist.
3 Tips for hiring a scopist:
1. Do your research. Require a resume and list of references from any potential hires. Before hiring a scopist, you should research their name. Learn a little bit about the background of the person you are going to hire. Avoid getting into business with an unreliable person.
2. Ensure that the scopist has gone through some form of training or (even better) a school specifically meant for scoping. There are many online scoping schools made available. In the end, the transcript speaks to how well you do your job, and you do not want a scopist to make you look bad.
3. Re-read the transcript after the scopist has done their job. As previously mentioned, you are trusting the scopist to do a superb job editing your transcript and it is best to double and triple check their work before the transcript lands in the client’s hands.
