Break Away to Minimize Physical Discomfort

Do not underestimate the effectiveness of taking breaks. If you've worked in the court reporting field long enough, you are painfully aware of these repetitive stress injuries court reporters are susceptible to:

     -   Carpal tunnel

     -   Upper limb disorder

     -   Tendonitis

     -   De Quervain's tenosynovitis (Mommy Wrist)

     -   Neck and back pain

Symptoms creep in slowly as reporters spend long hours sitting very still in one position with their arms stretched forward on keyboards. It starts with occasional numbness, swelling, and stiffness. Left untreated, these minor pangs can evolve into serious injuries.

Here’s advice:

  • Reduce keystroke force: Use a padded stand to help alleviate some arm pressure and avoid bending your wrist while keystroking.
  • Posture: Sit up straight with feet on the floor. Make sure the chair height allows you to keep your feet flat on the floor or use a footrest if your chair doesn’t allow it. Avoid slouching and not maintaining control of your core. Your knees should be level or slightly higher than your hips.
  • Neck: Avoid bending your neck downward.
  • Re-position yourself periodically: Sitting for long hours in one position can cause long-term pain.
  • TheraBand FlexBar: proven physical therapy tool to increase strength and dexterity, and eliminate pain in the arm, hand, and shoulder.

Again, be aware of the warning signs of these conditions and act. It’ll bring a greater sense of balance – not just physically but to all the areas of your life.
